sugar cookies

This is a cookie recipe I like to use if I am baking cookies for a gathering where there will be little kids, but everyone seems to like these sugar cookies.  They have a good simple and sweet taste...and they are easy to make.

Sugar Cookies
1 cup butter, softened
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
2 3/4 cups flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. baking powder

Cream butter and sugar. Add egg and vanilla. Mix well.

In a separate bowl, stir together flour, baking soda and baking powder.
Add dry ingredients to butter mixture and mix well until dough is formed.

Pinch off portions of dough and roll into balls about 1" in diameter. Roll the dough balls in sugar to coat.

Place on a greased cookie sheet.

Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for about 9 minutes.  Take them out before they brown if you like them soft and chewy.

If you want to fancy them up for Christmas you can press the dough balls into colored sprinkles before baking.
