from the kitchen window

Looked out my kitchen window to see a wake of buzzards, silhouetted against the sky. As far as I know, there isn't anything dead on our property. They may be up there just catching the morning sun...or waiting for the builders across the road to leave for lunch so they can have their own lunch on the deer carcass over there.

I learned there are several terms for a group of buzzards; wake, comittee, venue or volt. It seems like 'wake' is the most fitting, since you can't help thinking of a funeral when you see them.   If a group of buzzards are in flight, they are called a 'kettle'.  It's easy to see how that term came about  - when they are circling over  their next meal, they are swirling around like soup  being stirred  in a kettle.

Tried to zoom a little closer but you still can't see any detail. If this had been crows, they would have taken off as soon as they saw a little movement at the window.

Beautiful sky today too!
