antique savings bank

My dad and his brother each received one of these little savings banks from their grandfather when they were young boys.

This one is my uncle's.  It has the name of a bank embossed on it. I am not sure if these were give-aways or if they had to be purchased...but the idea was that they had to be taken back into the bank to be unlocked.
Probably at that time they would encourage the saver to put their money in a bank account.

It's a very well made little bank, sturdy brass with a leather book binding type cover.

This one hadn't been opened in a very long time.  My clever younger brother picked it open and crafted a key for it.

Inside was $2.09.   But the dollar bills are dated 1935 !

This bill was pretty crumpled and ragged. Maybe someone once tried to fish it out of the slot using a knife or a screwdriver!

They are "Silver Dollar Certificate"s ..."One Dollar in Silver Payable to the Bearer on Demand".

It's like opening a time capsule. Imagine, those bills being tucked through the slot all those years ago by my uncle as a young boy.  Wonder what he dreamed he would save up to buy?

No one is sure what became of my dad's bank like this.  It is possible that my older brother and I played with it when we were little and lost or broke it.  I like to think it is packed away somewhere and will turn up with more interesting old bills and coins inside.
